Frustrations of Dyslexia - By Chalm

The best thing we can do for our community is recognize how dyslexia affects the self confidence in learners.  Lets face it dyslexia is here to stay.

Kara Tointon in her documentary “Don’t Call me Stupid” pointed out that dyslexia covers other areas of life other than reading and writing.  Short term memory effects most dyslexics making it harder to remember names and losing something that has just been put down.    Kara is an actress who struggles with dyslexia and the side effect of short term memory loss.  She always losses things like a phone and keys and this makes her very disorganized and unprepared.  Losing a lot of objects and looking disorganized can make you feel and look “stupid” and other people tend to comment in mean ways therefore making the person suffer and make bad decisions.

Visual Stress is a symptom of dyslexia.  There are different types of ways Dyslexics see text on paper.  Three of many possible ways of seeing the writing is patches of bright light, words disappearing or letters changing places. This causes the brain to work harder and therefore tires out the learner then their concentration lessens and they are unable to take in the information they need.  Therefore this means they miss out on important information and weakens their confidence in themselves.

In New Zealand primary schools kids who need extra learning support (dyslexics) are taken out of the main classroom to have extra help.  This is a good thing except they miss out on what the class is learning and therefore are put behind once more. An example of this may be the kid is taken out of class to have help with reading while the rest of the class is learning about math.  This is important because the kid is again put behind and this not hurts only the child but their future.

My thoughts are that dyslexics should have their own classrooms where they all learn at their own pace.  The teachers who teach these kids must have certain qualities of knowing how to deal with dyslexics. One really important thing for the learning process that is already difficult would be for the teacher to speak English clearly because this removes another frustration from trying to learn which is already difficult.  I am raising this because I am dyslexic and rely on the spoken part of learning so much.

Lets face it dyslexia is here to stay.  Do not ignore the fact that there are some kids who struggle more than others, lets find a way to help them and improve their self esteem.
